When Everything Changes, Change Everything

I have had a lot of change lately; my work, my business, my relationships, my food, my training, my values, my identity.

It seems like every day I wake up and something else changes, and I find myself resisting, trying to stop the change and control it, make it do what I want it to do and when I want it to do that.

Life is funny like that. I’ve been specifically asking for these changes. I’ve been yearning for the space and time to sink into the things that are really important, to explore these long forgotten aspects of myself. I’ve been looking at ways to cut back on the things that take me away from those things, but just not feeling quite “ready” to do something about that. I’ve taken little steps, but I still want to hang on to what I know. I’m still afraid of the unknown.

And so the universe says to me “Yes Brooke (as it always does), of course you must have this” and things change.

But then I get hung up on the fact that it’s not HOW I wanted the change to happen, that someone else is forcing the change (purely because I wasn’t).
I freak out “But I’m not ready yet! That’s not how this is supposed to go. I thought it would’ve looked different from this!”

And all the while, the same saying keeps coming back to me;

“When everything changes, change everything”

So often we experience change, which is what is required for us to move forward, and we resist. We were unhappy the way we were before, yet we fight and struggle to keep things the same.

What if we just changed everything? What if we used it as an opportunity to start again, start anew? To breathe some freshness and life back into our tired, stale existence? What if we let go of the junk and invited in more joy, more opportunities for connection, inspiration, love? What would be different? What would be possible?

This is exactly what I asked for. The outcome is the same.  And if the outcome is what I wanted, why does it matter how I got there?

And of course I am ready! If I weren’t, this opportunity would’ve have presented itself. I could sit here and find fault, excuse and reason with how un-ready I am, how not {good, smart, rich, pretty, savvy, blah, blah, blah} enough to do it.  I could resist and complain about how I wanted it to be different.

I could be grateful for this opportunity, realising this is all part of a much bigger picture which I am nowhere near understanding yet (nor do I have to), and use this new space wisely, doing those things that light me up, that make me feel expansive and inspired. I could say, “I’m scared, but kinda excited” and just go for it. I could take action every day in the pursuit of my dreams. I could use the space to slow down and connect, to ask myself “What do I want and need today?” and then actually do that. My time. My agenda. My life.

That’s exactly what I’ll do. And that feels awesome.

So now, what about you?

Are you getting hung up on HOW something is happening rather than what the outcome will be?
Are you resisting because it looks different from your expectations?
Can you drop that expectation and focus on the outcome?

Stop. Surrender. Get clear on what it is YOU want. Be grateful for the opportunity that has presented itself. Use this beautiful gift to do what it is you want to do.

You don’t have to have it all figured out to move forward. You just need to move.

Fear? No Problem!

(Yep, that’s me!)

Have you ever felt afraid?

Is there something you want to change in your life, but fear keeps you from taking action? Keeps you stuck?

Maybe you want a new career, or to start your own business, but are afraid you’re not ‘good enough’ or are afraid to fail.

Or you want out of your shitty relationship, but are afraid of what it means to be single again, afraid no one will love you, afraid you don’t deserve to be happy.

You want to change your health, but are afraid of not succeeding, not knowing what to do, not sticking with it.

You want to sort out the financial mess you are in, but are afraid to ask for help, or to tell someone else about your debt, your shame, the poor choices you’ve made that have led you here.

Maybe you’ve always wanted to take up a new hobby, but you’re afraid of not being good at it, of looking foolish, of being judged.

Or maybe there’s a man, or woman, you are crazy about, but haven’t approached for fear of being rejected, humiliated and embarrassed.

The truth is, we all face fear on a continual basis, every single day. Some fears are big and obvious. Some are real. Some are small. Most are imagined, or made up.

All of these fears shape our experience of life, and they define how we feel in every moment.

Unfortunately, most of the time we feel stuck. We are paralysed by our fear, and stay stationary in shitty circumstances. We don’t take the action required to change our situation and our life becomes dull, frustrating and unsatisfying.

This is a dangerous place to live. This is where dreams die. Where passion, creativity, inspiration, motivation, energy and love wither and fade away.

But what if there is another option? What if you could embrace your fear, understand what it means, and use it to propel you forward into the life you are meant to be living? What would that mean for you? For your life?

What would you do, right now, if you had no fear?

On Thursday 29th May 2014, I want to show you a different possibility.

I will teach you how to recognise and embrace your fear when it shows up (because it will always show up).

We will go through the ins and outs of fear, so you walk away knowing exactly:

  • What fear looks and feels like; the different ways it manifests in your body & your life
  • How to understand your fear, and what it is there to show you
  • The simple steps to take when you feel fear, to guarantee you keep moving forward instead of staying stuck
  • How to turn your fear into excitement and action
  • How to accept, love and master your fear, in any area of your life

Fear is a big one for all of us, so I would LOVE for you to join us and learn what you need to take your life to the next level.

Aren’t you sick of your excuses? Isn’t it time you stepped up? Isn’t it time you said “Yes!”?

 YES, it is!

So clear your calendar, lock it in your diary, grab your friends and get your gorgeous little butts there. You do not want to miss this.

Why we can’t have summer all year round

Ah sweet, sweet autumn.

The seasons have definitely changed here in Sydney. The days are shorter, darker and colder, the ugg boots are out of hibernation, and life is slowing down.

I love this time of year, the changing of the colours in nature, the bite in the cold air, the gorgeous sunny days, and the anticipation of winter.
It makes me feel alive, and calls me to reconnect, to slow down and go inward.

I wasn’t always like this. I used to hate the onset of the cold; the tan I’d worked so hard to build starts to fade, my appetite changes, leaving me craving dense, heavy foods, right at the same time my motivation for exercise starts to diminish. My hot, little summer body will soon soften, my energy will drop, and my desire to socialize winds down.

I’d feel lazy, unhealthy, undesirable, and concerned I was a victim of SAD, and if I weren’t diligent, that depression would start to creep in and take me over (How good is marketing?!)

I would long for the easy days of summer where I felt so alive, so energized, so tanned and just down right delicious. I didn’t understand the point of autumn and winter. Seriously, WHY can’t I have summer all year round??”

If we think of the seasons as different times in one day, we begin to understand why all four season are necessary.
Spring is our morning, summer; the middle of the day, autumn; late afternoon/evening and winter; the nighttime.

It is during the day that we are most productive, most energetic and where we get most done. In the morning we set ourselves up for the day, and when done correctly, this allows us to accomplish the most. Through late afternoon and evening, we start to wind down, to pare back, to set ourselves up for a good rest, and during the night, we rest, we recover, we recoup, allowing us to do it all again tomorrow.

Imagine you have a rough night; you aren’t able to unwind and you don’t get enough sleep. How much harder is the next day? What is your energy like? How productive are you? How happy are you? Your capacity is limited, isn’t it?

Compare this with when you have a great night’s sleep: You wake up feeling amazing, nothing bothers you, you are productive, relaxed, alert and you love everyone and everything around you.

This is why we can’t have summer all year long. We need the slower months to rest, to unwind, and to nurture ourselves, so we can shine, ever so brightly come summer.

Understanding this, we don’t need to battle, struggle or resist the cooler months.
We can honour our need for rest, knowing that when the warmth comes again, we can step back into the world as the best version of ourselves; healthy, vibrant and full of life.

“If we don’t go within, we go without” (unknown)

Autumn asks us to slow down, to turn inwards.

Listen to and honour your body’s need for more rest at this time.
Go to bed a little earlier, sleep in a bit longer and take a nap when you need it.
Commit to fewer social/work activities.
Train less, or less intensely (hot yoga anyone?).

With spirit, with nature, with loved ones.
Meditate, go for slow walks in the bush or on the beach, journal, get creative (paint, draw, knit, cook, dance).

Think back over the past spring and summer; what are you most proud of? What do you need to change? What worked? What didn’t?

What do you need to let go of? What is no longer in alignment with your highest self, the person you want to be and the contribution you want to make?
“It’s safe for me to let go. I lovingly release that which no longer serves me, and I welcome in that which does.”

What do you need to bring back in? What will help you on your journey forward from here?
“I call back my _____________, to help me as I move forward with ease and grace. It is safe for me to receive”

Nourish yourself through your food, relationships, hobbies and work
What lights you up? What warms your soul? What feeds you?

Taking the time to nurture, nourish, love and support yourself now will ensure you have the resilience and life force to sustain you through the cold of winter.

Go gently and enjoy these last few weeks of autumn.

Peace out xx

May Madness!

…..well, nearly….

I had so much fun working with new clients from my March promotion. So many people jumped at the chance to make a positive change for themselves that I’m only just wrapping up all the sessions now.
It’s been so beautiful to witness the clarity, motivation and results that have come from these sessions, that I want to continue the love!

Introducing Pay-What-You-Can-Coaching!

I know that not everyone can afford to pay for coaching, or maybe you’re just not sure how coaching will benefit you and you don’t want to make that commitment just yet. So instead, you nominate what you want to pay for your coaching. How cool is that?

Want in?

Send an email to brooke@brookesurtees.com with “I Want In!” in the subject line, and I’ll send you an application form. Fill in all your details and answer every question, ensuring you include how much you want to pay for your session. (My usual fee for a one off 60 minute coaching session is $325)
If you are located outside of Sydney, please include your location so I can confirm available times.

Application forms are due by 6pm Monday 5th May.

I will then go through the applications and those who are successful will be contacted by 6pm Wednesday 7th May (unfortunately I can’t work with everyone!).

This decision will not be based on how much you are willing to pay, rather on how committed you are to participate fully, and therefore see results, so please give as much detail as possible in your application form!

I cannot wait to work with you! Good luck 🙂

Available for a limited time and a limited number of spaces.
Offer is for new clients only.

Less Thinking, More Feeling

It’s safe for me to let go.

Whoa, that had been a long time coming.

Recently I released a relationship I’d been hanging onto long after I knew it was time to let go.
I fought and fought myself for so long, trying to explain what had happened, trying to find a reason how things could change so suddenly. Hoping that the other person would make the decision I was avoiding. Hanging on to the idea of what could have been.

Being the intelligent, logical person I am, I thought and thought about it. I tried to analyze, explain and understand this situation.  And I went around and around in circles getting more and more frustrated, annoyed and unhappy.

Finally, thankfully, my soul said “ENOUGH!” and I saw, or rather, felt, so very clearly what I had been avoiding. I felt it, acknowledged it and voiced it. I asked for what I needed and in that moment I released myself to move forward, to grow and to learn. Even more beautifully, I released the other person to do the same.

EXHALE. And then peace. I am safe. I am enough.

The thing is, I KNEW all along what I wanted and needed to do. That’s why I was so unhappy, why I struggled. I made it hard for myself because I was ignoring my soul’s call to step up and into a bigger version of myself.

I was ignoring my truth, therefore inviting criticism, helplessness and frustration in.

I tried to THINK my way through this situation, when I actually needed to FEEL my way through it. The whole way, my body was telling me what I needed to do. It would literally close up and shut down when I was around this person.

How many times in our days, in our lives, do we ignore those quiet callings of our soul? How often do we tell ourselves what we want and need, instead of asking ourselves and listening, really listening, for the answer?

So often we say, “I just want someone to tell me what to do” not realizing at that exact moment our soul is saying “I am telling you. I just need you to listen”

Our intuition is our best guide, our best coach.

 We know everything we need to know to move forward, in any situation. We just need to tune in. To listen. To breathe. My dear friend, Lani, puts it so beautifully;

“We just need to shut up so we can hear what it is we are meant to do”

So next time I am fighting myself, forcing something, or being someone I don’t want to be, I’m going to shut up. And breathe, and feel my way through. I’ll listen to what I know, (not what I think) and I’ll act on that. And it will be easy.

Less thinking. More feeling xx

Less Haste, More Speed

I’m currently in the middle of an incredible online business course, which is so much fun, and definitely the best investment I’ve made in myself and my business so far.
(It’s only offered once a year, so I will be posting details of it once it becomes available for 2015. This course is a MUST for anyone who runs, or wants to run their own business, and take it to the next level. Sign up for my newsletter to make sure you are kept in the loop!)

Even though I love the content and have learnt so much already, I was finding myself getting overwhelmed. I mean, there’s so much work! There’s new modules released every week, chock block full of videos, worksheets, tasks and readings to get through….and I wasn’t getting through it.

I would read other people’s comments in the forums and comparison would strike.

I’m not up to that module yet. I haven’t completed that task yet. I haven’t even started that task! I don’t have enough time. I can’t keep up. Who are these people?!?”

This comparison and anxiety kept me from being productive. I’d worry about, and beat myself up for, falling behind rather than doing any actual work.

Here I was, doing this amazing course to enrich and enhance my business, and I was trying to do it on someone else’s schedule; on some made up idea of what it “should” look like.
I have no idea who these other people in the course are. I don’t know where they live, what their daily lives are like, if they are currently working or not, what support they have, what other things they have going on right now.

I know nothing about them and here I was comparing myself to them….
and falling short.

Then my intuition spoke up.

I’m doing this course for me, my life and my business. I need to do it in a way that supports me, that suits me. It doesn’t matter if I finish it in 8 weeks, or in 8 months. What matters is that it fits and that it works for me. That I enjoy the process so I am open to gaining the most out of it.

Revive your soul

So, I stopped.

Instead of spending my whole weekend locked away working furiously to catch up, I went out, and spent 2 beautiful, full days with people who love me, and whom I love. I got out of my office, and into nature. I connected, had fun, relaxed. I stopped forcing myself, and allowed myself to just be, and enjoy my life.

By taking the pressure off myself, by slowing down and stepping back, I opened myself up to receive incredible insight and inspiration. Solutions to those tasks I had been stuck on, came to me easily. I saw what my next steps would be. Awesome ideas for new projects and offerings for my clients came to me effortlessly.

No thinking, forcing or hard work required.

So, the next time you find yourself trying too hard, hitting your head against a wall because you “just can’t figure it out”, stop. Breathe. Go do something fun. Go do the exact opposite of what you are meant to be doing. And see what happens. You just might find the answer, or inspiration you were looking for.

Less haste my dear, and more (easy, effortless, flowing) speed xx
